The highlight of next week is my book launch in Foyles Bookshop in Bristol for my two short story collections. I haven’t prepared a speech, although I have rehearsed reading the story I’ll be reading on the night in a decent animated way. I guess I’ll be able to talk briefly about the two books, but what is there to say? Perhaps I could compare the stories in one with the stories in the other, or talk about the quality of the books, in particular Mercy, the hardback with Tartarus Press which is extremely elegant. But really what there is to say is all contained within the stories themselves. Both books have had some good reviews, by which I mean measured and intelligent, rather than gushing and false-sounding, so I’m very pleased about that, and about the night itself, I’ll be very pleased if I manage to read the story well and not stumble anywhere on the words.
